Kia Carens CNG vs Maruti Ertiga CNG

In the Indian auto market, the 7-seater MPV segment is dominated by two strong contenders — the Maruti Ertiga CNG and the newly launched Kia Carens CNG. With Carens entering the CNG category, competition in this space has intensified. Let’s compare both models based on their price, interior, safety, powertrain, and mileage details.

Price Difference

The Maruti Ertiga CNG base variant (LXi CNG) starts at ₹10,76,300 (ex-showroom), while the top variant (ZXi CNG) goes up to ₹12.11 lakh.
On the other hand, the Kia Carens CNG is priced from ₹11,77,059 (ex-showroom).

Interior and Features

The Ertiga CNG offers comfortable 7-seating with decent legroom and headroom. It comes with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system (with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support), rear AC vents, a multi-function steering wheel, USB charging ports, and foldable third-row seats. However, the plastic quality feels average.
In contrast, the Carens CNG offers a more premium cabin with features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen, ventilated front seats, a leatherette-wrapped steering wheel, ambient lighting, and wireless charging. The third row is more comfortable, and despite the CNG tank, the boot space can expand up to 216 liters. Overall, the Carens’ interior feels more luxury-oriented compared to the Ertiga.

Safety Features

The Ertiga CNG comes equipped with 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, hill-hold assist, rear parking sensors, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and a speed alert system as standard. It has received a 3-star rating in Global NCAP safety tests, which is considered average. The top variant also includes a 360-degree camera and TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) for added safety.
The Carens CNG is also strong in terms of safety. It comes equipped with 6 airbags, ABS, ESC, hill assist, forward collision avoidance, and blind spot monitoring — offering a more advanced safety package. In Global NCAP tests, it received a 3-star rating for adult protection and a 5-star rating for child safety, making it safer than the Ertiga. The Carens also features a high-strength steel body structure for better crash protection.

Engine and Performance

The Ertiga CNG is powered by a 1.5L K15C engine, which produces 87 bhp of power and 121 Nm of torque in CNG mode. It is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The company claims a fuel efficiency of 26.11 km/kg, offering a driving range of over 1,400 km on a full tank.
The Carens CNG, on the other hand, uses a 1.5L Smartstream engine that produces around 95 bhp (estimated) of power and 136 Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Its estimated mileage is around 16–17 km/kg, which provides a total driving range of over 1,000 km
