The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to make the electronic toll collection system (FASTag) more efficient and transparent across the entire country. To achieve this, the government agency has decided to deactivate incomplete KYC (Know Your Customer) FASTags after January 31, 2024, even if there is a valid balance in the accounts. This decision is part of the 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' program, aiming to bring transparency to the electronic toll payment system across India.
NHAI claims that in several cases, it has been observed that multiple FASTags have been issued for a single vehicle. However, under the new program, the government agency aims to ensure that only one FASTag is assigned to a single vehicle. Additionally, the program will discourage the use of a single FASTag for multiple vehicles. NHAI has stated that FASTag users should update their KYC by following the RBI guidelines and complete the KYC process for their latest FASTag by the end of January this year. It emphasizes that only the latest FASTag account will remain active, as after the deadline, previous tags will be deactivated or blacklisted.
If you are using the same FASTag for multiple vehicles or multiple FASTags for a single vehicle, this should be a cause for concern. If you are unsure whether your latest FASTag has updated KYC or not, it is time to check and update it if necessary.
Here, we provide you with details on how to check and update FASTag KYC, which can assist you in ensuring compliance with the latest guidelines.
Identifying your latest FASTag
First, determine which FASTag you consistently use. This should be the same FASTag for which you are intending to update your KYC.
Check KYC Status
You can check the KYC status of your FASTag in several ways
To check your KYC status on the FASTag portal (https://fastag.ihmcl.com/), log in and go to the 'My Profile' section. There, you will be able to view your KYC status. You can also use OTP for verification. After logging in, navigate to the dashboard and select the 'My Profile' option. This will display all the details submitted during the registration process.
FASTag Mobile App
Install the FASTag mobile app on your smartphone and log in with your registered mobile number. There, you will find the option to check your KYC status.
SMS
Send an SMS with 'CHKFAS <FASTag ID>' to your registered mobile number. You will receive an SMS with your KYC status in a few minutes.
Toll booth employee
Inquire about the KYC status of your FASTag with an employee at any toll booth.
Update KYC
If your KYC is not updated, you can do it online or offline
- Online: If KYC is not updated for your latest FASTag, look for the 'KYC' sub-section under the 'My Profile' section. After clicking on the KYC sub-section, you may be prompted to choose a customer type. Fill in the mandatory fields by submitting necessary identification documents and address proof. Additionally, upload a passport-sized photo as proof and details of the address. Before submitting these details, make sure to tick the self-declaration box for document and information verification. Now, submit your KYC information.
- Offline: Visit your nearest bank branch and update your KYC by submitting the required documents.
Be prepared with these essential documents.
When updating KYC for FASTag, ensure that these documents are readily available
- Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC): Make sure you have the RC of the vehicle for which the FASTag is being updated.
- Passport-sized Photo: Keep a passport-sized photo ready.
- Identification Proof: There should be one government-issued identification proof in the name of the vehicle owner, for whom the FASTag is being updated. The options include:
- Driving License
- PAN Card
- Aadhar Card
- Passport
- Voter ID
Note: Any one of these identification proofs can be used.
- Pay attention to the deadline: Ensure that you update your KYC before January 31, 2024. Otherwise, your FASTag will be deactivated, and you won't be able to use it for toll payments.
- Additional information: If you have any doubts about the FASTag KYC update process, you can call the FASTag helpline number 1033 or refer to the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section available on the FASTag portal for more information.
