Recently, Government of India has launched 100% Ethanol based car i.e. Toyota Innova Hycross in India. This is world’s first 100% ethanol based vehicle. According to reports, this will be a revolution in automobile industry because it will be cost-effective, import-substitute, pollution free and indigenous. It will be very helpful for our farmers growth also because ethanol prepares from sugarcane juice.
This car will be based on BS-6 standard and electrified flex fuel vehicle.  The major though behind to launch biofuel based car is to save lot of amount which is spent on the import of petroleum.

About Toyota Innova Hycross – Flex Fuel Vehicle

The only Toyota vehicle that can run on 100% ethanol is the Innova Hycross. It was launched in India on March 8, 2023, by the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari. The Innova Hycross is a flex-fuel vehicle, which means that it can run on a blend of petrol and ethanol. However, it can also run on 100% ethanol, making it the world's first 100% ethanol-powered car.

The Innova Hycross is powered by a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine that produces 115 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a 7-speed CVT automatic transmission. The Innova Hycross has a fuel economy of 18.5 kilometers per liter (kmpl) on petrol and 16.3 kmpl on ethanol.

The Innova Hycross is available in two variants: G and V. The G variant is priced at INR 16.99 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi) and the V variant is priced at INR 17.89 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The launch of the Innova Hycross is a significant step towards promoting the use of ethanol as a fuel in India. Ethanol is a renewable fuel that can be produced from sugarcane, corn, or other biomass. It is a cleaner-burning fuel than petrol and can help to reduce air pollution.

Advantages & features of ethanol as fuel

Flex-fuel vehicle  servicing: Major Factors

However, there are some considerations specific to FFVs, which are designed to run on a blend of ethanol and gasoline, typically E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline) or lower ethanol blends like E10 (10% ethanol, 90% gasoline). Here are some key points to keep in mind when servicing a flex-fuel vehicle:

Regular Maintenance: Follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule outlined in the owner's manual. This includes routine oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and other regular maintenance tasks.

Ethanol-Related Components: FFVs have specific components designed to handle ethanol. These may include fuel lines, seals, and gaskets that are compatible with ethanol. Ensure that these components are inspected and replaced as needed during routine maintenance.

Fuel System Inspections: FFVs may have a more robust fuel system to handle ethanol, including a larger fuel pump and modified fuel injectors. Regularly inspect the fuel system for any signs of leaks or wear and replace components as necessary.

Fuel Filter Replacement: The fuel filter in an FFV may need to be replaced more frequently compared to a non-FFV due to the potential for ethanol to attract and absorb water, which can lead to fuel system issues.
