BYD Seal Review: 600KM Range, Fully Charged in 37 Minutes
The Chinese car manufacturer company BYD is known for selling electric cars globally. BYD has been working in the EV segment since 2017. The company started with electric buses, followed by launching its first EV, the E6, in India in 2021.
After that, in the same year, the company introduced the BYD Atto 3. Following the same sequence, the company has unveiled its third car as the BYD Seal electric sedan. With its stylish design, powerful engine, and tech-loaded cabin, we were invited to drive this car in Delhi.
Where we drove the BYD Seal electric car, after which we have brought detailed information for you about the car's range, features, and driving impressions. By reading this, you have all the information about the car.
BYD Seal Design: The design of the BYD Seal is based on the Ocean-X concept. It features an aerodynamic body with a drag coefficient of 0.21 CD, which is the best available for any electric car currently sold in the world.
Talking about the front look, the BYD Seal features a popular split lighting setup. The headlights are placed at the corners of the bonnet, while LED DRLs are installed below the front bumper.
In addition, the car features 19-inch alloy wheels and a full LED light bar at the rear for the taillights. Moreover, below the bonnet, you get a 50-liter frunk, which is sufficient for easy placement of chargers and charging cables.
Another special highlight of the exterior design of the BYD Seal is its coupe-like glass roof, designed to keep the car's interior cool from heat.
Talking about the rear design, a full LED light-bar-style taillight is provided, extending the length of the electric sedan's boot. This electric car offers 400 liters of boot space. However, there is a slight drawback in terms of the absence of a spare wheel.
BYD Seal Interior and Features: As soon as you step into the car's cabin, you are greeted with a stylish interior look. High-quality leather is used everywhere from the dashboard to the door cards.
Metal finish is given on the trim pieces, which adds a luxurious touch to the car's look. As always, the most important aspect of the Seal's interior, like the Atto 3, is the 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system.
You can switch this 15.6-inch screen from landscape to portrait mode, and it also features wireless Android Auto connectivity. Overall, using it is quite smooth.
However, amidst this large infotainment system, BYD has once again removed most of the controls, including the air conditioning system, from the main menu and sub-menus. This means that using this display while driving is not as easy.
In addition, the car features a 10.25-inch digital driver display, placed behind the flat-bottom steering wheel. Furthermore, it comes with a head-up display, 2 wireless charging pads, a 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel, and features like a panoramic sunroof.
In addition, it also comes with a 360-degree camera and a premium audio system. Front seats feature ventilation features, while rear seats are quite spacious. Additionally, its leg space is also quite good.
All in all, the rear side-vented seats make any journey quite enjoyable. However, taller individuals may feel a lack of headroom while sitting, which is due to the coupe-like glass roof.
When it comes to passenger safety, the BYD Seal offers quite impressive features including 9 airbags, radar-directed ADAS, and other amenities. It's worth mentioning that it has received a 5-star safety rating from Euro NCAP.
Performance and Range of BYD Seal: BYD has introduced this luxury sedan in 3 variants. These include the Dynamic Range, Premium Range, and Performance variants. The starting price of this car in the Indian market is 41 lakh rupees (ex-showroom).
Both the Dynamic and Premium variants are presented with a single-motor, rear-wheel drive setup. Meanwhile, the Performance variant of the Seal comes with dual electric motors and all-wheel drive.
The Seal BYD is designed on the modular E-Platform 3.0 setup, which features an 800V electrical architecture. It also offers the car manufacturer's blade LFP battery capability. The setup of the e-Platform 3.0 also means that the battery pack of the Seal has been improved.
The dynamic variant of the BYD Seal EV comes with a 61.44 kWh battery pack, providing a range of 510 kilometers. Meanwhile, its premium variant and performance variant are equipped with an 82.56 kWh battery pack, capable of delivering ranges of approximately 650 kilometers and 580 kilometers, respectively.
The battery pack installed in the BYD Seal supports DC fast charging up to 150 kW. With this capability, the car can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 37 minutes.
In addition, it is equipped with an 11-kilowatt onboard AC charger, which takes approximately 8.6 hours to fully charge the car. The BYD Seal EV accelerates from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in about 6 seconds, while the performance variant achieves this speed in 3.8 seconds.
In addition, there is a premium variant that provides a range of 650 kilometers on a single charge with its 82.56 kWh battery pack. This battery pack is powered by a single electric motor, producing 308 bhp of power and 360 Nm of torque.
The BYD Seal EV all-wheel drive performance variant (which we drove) is equipped with an 82.56 kWh battery pack. It provides a range of 580 kilometers according to the NEDC testing cycle.
The battery pack powers two electric motors (one on each axle), collectively producing 523 bhp of power and 670 Nm of peak torque. This supercar is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.8 seconds.
The BYD Seal model with the larger battery pack supports 150 kW DC fast charging, and the car manufacturer claims that when plugged into these fast chargers, the electric sedan will charge its battery from 0 to 80 percent in just 45 minutes.
BYD Seal Driving Impression: The variant of the BYD Seal that we drove offers significantly better performance. All variants of the Seal come with three driving modes - Eco, Normal, and Sport.
During driving, the ECO mode is the least responsive among all three. However, in Sport mode, the Seal becomes quite active, providing you with an excellent performance experience. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 3.8 seconds.
However, changing the driving mode also alters the damping level and the feel and resistance level of the steering wheel. Speaking of the steering, it is smooth and weighted, providing you with quite good feedback.
The hard chassis of the BYD Seal integrates the battery pack for added strength. You can easily navigate bumps and potholes with this car. The 19-inch wheels enhance your driving experience.
If you once hit the speed with the BYD Seal EV, its chassis offers you comfortable driving pleasure even on the twisting parts of the tarmac. Overall, the driving impression of the car is quite remarkable.
Our Take on the BYD Seal EV: The BYD Seal is a good option for adventure-seeking individuals who appreciate its aerodynamic design, premium interior, and the exhilarating performance of the supercar-beating performance variant, making it an exciting electric sedan choice.
If you find cars with German and Swedish ICE engines a bit old school, then riding in the BYD Seal electric SUV will definitely entertain you.
