Cheapest Electric Car in India
The Comet EV can be purchased as the country’s most affordable electric car.
Its price starts at ₹7.50 lakh and goes up to ₹9.86 lakh (ex-showroom). Under
the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) program, the
MG Comet EV can be bought for just
₹4.99 lakh, with a battery rental cost of ₹3.1 per km. This car is available in
three variants – Executive, Excite, and Exclusive. Let’s know more about its
design, features, battery, motor, and range details.
Design:
The Comet EV has a unique and attractive design that makes it stand out on
urban roads. Its length is less than 2.97 meters, and it features a two-door
configuration, LED daytime running lamps, connected taillamps, and a Star-Rider
grille. It is available in five color options – Candy White, Aurora Silver,
Starry Black, Candy White/Starry Black, and Apple Green/Starry Black. Its
4.2-meter turning radius makes it easy to drive in tight spaces. Over 250
customization options, such as stickers and graphics, make it even more
appealing.
The interior of
the Comet EV is premium and packed with technology. It features a 10.25-inch
dual screen setup (for infotainment and instrument cluster), wireless Android
Auto/Apple CarPlay, 55+ connected car features, and the i-SMART system with
over 100 voice commands. Other features include keyless entry, a reverse
parking camera, and one-touch slide and recline seats. However, the seats might
feel lacking in thigh support.
In terms of
safety, the Comet EV comes equipped with dual front airbags, ABS+EBD, a tire
pressure monitoring system (TPMS), reverse parking sensors, and a high-strength
body with 17 hot-stamped panels. However, it does not offer six airbags or an
NCAP crash rating. Higher variants include additional features such as
electronic stability control (ESC), hill hold assist, and rear disc brakes.
Battery, Motor, and Range
The
Comet EV is powered by a 17.3 kWh prismatic lithium-ion battery (IP67
rated) paired with a permanent magnet synchronous motor, which produces 41.42
BHP and 110 Nm of torque. Its ARAI-claimed range is 230 km, but in real-world
conditions, it is limited to around 180–191 km. It takes 3.5 hours to fully
charge using a 7.4 kW charger and 7 hours with a 3.3 kW charger. However, it
does not support DC fast charging. The top speed of the Comet EV is 101 km/h.
