Mahindra Thar Roxx: The New Off-Road King
Whenever you think about off-road journeys, a few vehicles always come to mind. But Mahindra Thar is always at the top of this list. From the very beginning, the Thar has been a hardcore off-roader. However, it was never a family car, mainly due to the lack of rear doors.
Because of this, some people had difficulty getting in and out of the vehicle, as the front seats had to be pushed forward to access the rear. But now that problem has been solved, as Mahindra has launched its 5-door Thar. The company has named this new Thar SUV the Thar Roxx.
Its starting price has been set at ₹12.99 lakh ex-showroom for the petrol RWD variant. Known for its powerful capabilities, the Thar has always been a favorite among off-road enthusiasts. Now, with the launch of the Thar Roxx, Mahindra has once again captured everyone's attention.
With this in mind, we will review the new 5-door Thar Roxx for all auto enthusiasts. Yes, the Drivespark team reached Kochi to test the new Thar Roxx, and after driving it, we have brought you accurate and precise information about this SUV.
Mahindra Thar Roxx Design
The Thar Roxx retains its boxy shape, but several changes have been made to this SUV. Starting with the LED headlights, it now includes C-shaped DRLs and LED fog lights.
The grille is completely new and comes in body-colored paint and a front parking camera, which is part of the 360-degree camera feature. Speaking of paint, the Roxx offers 7 color options, including some new shades that look stunning.
The bumpers have been slightly modified, but the hood lines and creases remain the same. It features new 19-inch dual-tone alloy wheels with a tire profile of 255/60/R19. The SUV also has large chunky fenders that give it a muscular off-roader look. It retains the same matte black finished ORVMs but now with a camera on each side.
As you move forward, the main change you'll notice is the addition of rear doors. While the front door handles are finished in matte black, the rear door handles are finished in body color as they are positioned higher near the C-pillar.
The C-pillar features a unique sloping line that gives the Thar Roxx a distinctive rear design. Moving to the back of the SUV, you'll find LED taillights, a full-size spare wheel, and now it also includes a rearview wiper along with a defogger.
If you open the tailgate, you'll find that the Thar now offers 644 liters of boot space, which is quite spacious. Additionally, it comes with 60:40 split seats that can be folded flat to provide even more boot space.
Mahindra Thar Roxx Interiors
The first thing that will catch your attention inside is the large panoramic sunroof, which is the biggest in its segment. Additionally, the light ivory-white interior makes the cabin feel even more spacious and airy.
The dashboard and doors feature soft-touch materials along with contrast stitching. It also comes with a new 10.25-inch infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, providing you with a wealth of information about the SUV.
The steering wheel is now electric and feels very light, making city driving much easier and allowing you to make U-turns with ease. It is a flat-bottom wheel with steering-mounted controls on both sides. However, it is only adjustable for tilt, not telescopic.
The front driver's seat is now 6-way electrically adjustable, and both front seats are ventilated. The seating comfort is good, ensuring you won’t feel fatigued even on long journeys.
The rear seat is also comfortable but lacks under-thigh support. You now get an armrest with 2 cup holders. There are 3 headrests, but only 2 are adjustable. However, there are now rear AC vents that will help cool the large cabin more quickly.
Mahindra Thar Roxx Engine and Handling
It comes with both a 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine and a 2.2-liter diesel engine. The base-spec Mahindra Roxx MX1, powered by the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, produces 160hp and 330Nm of peak torque. Meanwhile, the higher-spec petrol variants deliver 177hp and 380Nm of torque.
On the other hand, the diesel base variants produce 150 hp and 330 Nm of peak torque, while the higher-spec models generate 175 hp and 370 Nm of peak torque.
We drove the top-spec diesel manual 4x4 variant of this SUV. Initially, the vehicle accelerates slowly, but once the turbo engine kicks in, there is a sudden surge of power. Both mid-range acceleration and top speed are very impressive.
The responsibility of braking is handled by disc brakes on all sides, providing excellent stopping power. Suspension is one of the key updates in the Roxx. It features a double-wishbone suspension setup at the front and a Penta-link suspension at the rear, offering improved handling.
We also drove the car on potholes and rough roads, and the suspension handled it effortlessly. At one point, we hit a bump, and the SUV almost lifted off the ground, but it landed smoothly and remained very stable.
Mahindra Thar Roxx Safety Features
Safety has been given top priority. It includes 6 airbags, a seat belt reminder, a passenger airbag on/off for child safety, ISOFIX mounts, ESC, hill hold control, hill descent control, traction control, TPMS, and many more. It also comes with Level 2 ADAS features.
