Tesla Entry in India

Tesla might soon enter the Indian market. Amid ongoing speculations over the past few months regarding Tesla’s entry, the Model Y was recently spotted testing on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

Following the appearance of the testing mule's image, it is becoming evident that the company is preparing for a full-fledged entry into the Indian market. Let's look at Tesla's future plans and find out the expected price of the Model Y.

Model Y to be Tesla’s First Car in India

The possibility of Tesla entering the Indian EV (electric vehicle) market is stronger than ever. The company has started preparing to launch the Model Y as its first car in India. It is also possible that Tesla may introduce it under a different name in the Indian market.

Showroom Also Ready

To strengthen its presence in India, Tesla has already rented a 4,003 sq. ft. space in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) for a showroom. The monthly rent for this space is approximately ₹35.26 lakh.

In addition, the company is also planning to open another showroom in Delhi. Tesla has begun hiring for over 20 job roles in India, including sales, customer support, and product development, indicating its future expansion plans.

Here’s the Plan

Tesla’s initial strategy for the Indian market will revolve around fully imported (CBU) models like the Model Y and Model 3. However, India’s high import duties—up to 110%—may significantly impact Tesla’s pricing. The estimated price of the Model Y in India is expected to be between ₹60–70 lakh.

Tesla will be competing with premium brands such as Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, and BYD. Its entry into India is expected to not only boost the EV market but also intensify competition in the premium electric vehicle segment.

Indian customers might soon get the opportunity to drive Tesla cars. The Indian government also aims for 30% EV adoption by 2030, a goal to which Tesla could contribute meaningfully.
